The Great Brownie Tasteoff The Yolanda Yummery Series Book 1 eBook Lisa Maliga
I had a problem getting drawn into this story. Ms. Maliga spent way too much time describing scenes, apparel, and what street or route Yolanda took to work, her friend's house, or back home again. None of this moved the story forward and seemed to be added for word count value alone. Yolanda's boyfriend Zac was an egotistical slump who cared more about himself than anyone else. He holds himself in high regard being the golf pro at Green Palms Mini Golf Course. Yep, you got it. He is the pro at a putt-putt golf course. I found his arrogance off-putting and Yolanda's tolerance of his attitude did not sit well with me. This is not the kind of role-model I like to promote in books.Yolanda could have been an interesting person if she had shown some emotion or a little backbone. She has a knack for baking and dreams of opening a bakery of her own. It will be called Yolanda's Yummery because everything she bakes is yummy. The Brownie Taste Off gains her some notoriety and temporarily helps the cat shelter. There is more going on than meets the eye with Whisker, Yolanda's newest cat that she adopted from the shelter. This storyline could develop into something bringing in an element of fantasy to the tale.
Yolanda's brownie recipe is included at the end of the story, however there is one secret ingredient that is withheld. It seems to be a "magical" something that was left by her grandmother in the back of the spice cabinet.
Format/Typo Issues: I found no significant proofing errors.

The Great Brownie Tasteoff The Yolanda Yummery Series Book 1 eBook Lisa Maliga Reviews
I get the premise, but honestly, this book left me a little bored, confused, and scratching my head. It came across as something for a teen, but then at points not so much. There was no depth of character. I don't think the author knew what she was doing. This had to be a first shot at this kind of novel, and is shows.
It reads like some crafty person who desperately wanted to write a book. How hard can it be?
Right?
I won't be reading anything else by this author. It was too newbie for me. It also needs to be proofread.
The Great Brownie Taste-off (The Yolanda's Yummery Series Book 1)
Yolanda works at an animal shelter but she really wants her own bakery. Just reading about some of the ways she decorates her cupcakes make me very hungry but I think also they would look tooo pretty to eat.
Her friend gets her an interview at a gentleman's club where she ends up typing a letter-for the takeover of the cat shelter. She goes back the next day and makes a deal with the boss, her brownies vs the freeze and bake co. and if she wins the shelter stays.
Love that everybody in the book has a trade, a glassblower, a lotion maker, she bakes and I like how she improvises with healthier choices.
She has dreams that lead her to put in other ingredients to win the contest. Her boyfriend is part of the picture but not exclusively.
Liked how the book came out, not too much drama and easy to keep track of the characters. Happy to learn there are other books in this series. This book came with the brownie recipe!
A magical cat, sweet treats, the makings of a very imaginative story but as far as being entertained I was sadly not. I have no doubt that the author is indeed creative and very passionate about writing and I hope she continues along that path. I will begin with the parts I really enjoyed in the story, I thought the dream scenarios were highly entertaining and that the story was going to pick up, until it came to light that they were just that...dreams. I'm glad Yolanda realized that her boyfriend was a jerk and showed him the door, but just like a boomerang he appeared over and over again. I thought she described her characters and scenes very well, I could get a visual from most of them.
The parts of the story that were most distracting for me were the repetitive actions of the main character, for instance the cat care, the feeding and treats, it became quite redundant and didn't enhance the story line. Also the names of all the products, businesses and streets, the first two representing endorsements; it almost gives the story an advertisement feel. I know we live in a material world but in a story it becomes trite.
This review is only my honest opinion of this work and I sincerely hope that those reading it will not be influenced by it, we all have different tastes and I am only one in a world of readers who may very well love this read.
The Great Brownie Taste-off was exactly what I expected—a sweet (pardon the pun) and easy read.
Yolanda Cater works at the Crown Street Cat Shelter but wants to own a bakery one day. She loves to bake and make other people happy. When her friend tells Yolanda she has a job for her that pays $900 a night Yolanda has to check it out. Of course it is in a strip club but the owner doesn't think Yolanda can cut it as a stripper … either does she. He offers her a job as a secretary but when she sees the first letter is about closing the cat shelter Yolanda turns it down. Instead she challenges the man to a brownie bake-off. If he wins his other company, a pre-made frozen brownie giant, can have the building. If she wins, the cat shelter stays.
There is so much to this story than that. The subplot is really interesting and fun. I won’t go into it all as I don’t want to spoil the story for you, the reader. Just know what you see isn't all there is.
There was just one small complaint I had as a reader, not one that ruined the book but did make it hard reading in some places. The author uses a lot of description, especially when it comes to clothing. Every time a character reenters the story we get to hear about how they are dressed. It did take a bit from the story and had me skipping some parts of it.
All in all, I enjoyed this book and look forward to more from the author.
