A Men of Falcon Pointe Novel

Trent Farnsworth moves to Falcon Pointe to get as far away from his controlling family and religion as he can. While his conservative upbringing makes it hard for Trent to admit he’s gay, he accidentally outs himself in front of his four new roommates. None of the men living at 959 Brenton Street are what the world would consider normal, but all four accept him for who he is. He never expects to feel right at home in a loving discipline household. And when Trent falls for his much older landlord, Dr. Cory Venerin, he’s as surprised as anyone, but discovering Cory feels the same makes Trent realize he’s truly in the right place at the right time.

Until he tells his family he’s gay. His father uses any resource at his disposal to destroy him, including Trent’s love for Cory. As his father schemes to send Trent to a hospital whose sole purpose is to rip the gay out of him, Cory battles to save not only Trent—but also the possibility of a future together.

While the characters and story line is unique and enjoyable to read, I am extremely disgusted in such a negative portrayal of any religion. To have derogatory comments and misrepresentation, not only through this book but through multiple books in a series is extremely out of line. I do not care what religion is targeted, Ms. Durston should know better than to spread what amounts to hate rhetoric.

959 Brenton Street Men of Falcon Pointe Book 1 edition by Thianna Durston Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Now I really the characters in this book but I have to say I was not a huge fan of Trent's character for parts of this book because of his whole undecided back and forth was a little bit annoying after awhile, but he eventually grew on me and I ended up liking his character by the end of this book. Also the spanking was a little odd mostly the whole cousin aspect of that kind of weirded me out a little bit. Now I do not mind a good spanking in a BDSM novel but for the reasons it was done in this book I have to be honest and say I am not sure how I feel about it. It just came across so odd to me.

Trent moves in with four other men when his dorm room falls through and lets just say he gets a wide variety of men as his roommates.

I did really like Trent and Cory together and I thought Cory was very good for Trent.
I loved the way this author wrote these characters "yes even Trent when he finally makes up his mind" and this story. The way each different personality was portrayed and the way all of these men care about each other just made me like this book so much more.

So all together I really liked this story!
I would recommend this book!

I started 959 Brenton Street by Thianna Durston with a chip on my shoulder. I’d never heard or read about a discipline household, and the few domestic discipline books I have read left much to be desired. It was a genre that I’d started shying away from, but I’m glad I took the chance on this story, the first book in the Men of Falcon Pointe series.

I’M GLAD I TOOK THE CHANCE ON THIS STORY

The book has a rough start. Grammar-wise; my first notes to myself were whether I was going to DNF it over the lack of conjunctions.

However, as the story proceeded, the language smoothed out, and I was able to enjoy the tale, instead of being cranky about wording. I also didn’t feel the emotional content as well in the first half as I did in the second.

So, what happens when Trent, a gay Mormon, who is taking his first timid steps out of the closet, can’t move into his college dorm? He finds the most bizarre arrangement of roommates.

THE MOST BIZARRE ARRANGEMENT OF ROOMMATES

Cory is the head of the household, a paddle (or Trent’s apt description of a breadboard) wielding disciplinarian, who is also an obstetrician. Next is Cory’s cousin Greg, a cross-dressing cook. Then there’s Dave, a bisexual corporate lawyer who’s engaged, and finally there’s Alan, an intersex dog rescuer.

Trent finds friends at 959 Brenton Street, who become allies when he faces off against his parents and bullies. Romance blossoms between Trent and Cory, but in all honestly their relationship felt forced.

The age difference seemed to be a non-issue, but with Trent’s virgin status, I almost felt as if Cory was taking advantage of Trent, even though they progressed at Trent’s sedate pace. Still, once they broke the ice, the storyline relaxed until the next dilemma ratcheted up the drama.

There are spanking and paddling scenes, but not as many as I expected. The scenes themselves felt rather tame. Cory uses discipline as a punishment and deterrent, and as such, they succeeded in achieving goals where other avenues failed.

FELT RATHER TAME

The author closed out the book with a little background which I always enjoy reading. Sometimes, a reader takes what’s given as truth, so it was good to see what was fact and what the author took liberties with. There is also the opening chapter of book two, which I read, and have to say enticed me enough to add it to my to be read list.

So that chip? I’m happy to say it was knocked off by 959 Brenton Street. Although I didn’t feel the love between Cory and Trent, I’m anxious to see who the other men of Falcon Pointe find for their perfect matches.
It’s been a couple of weeks since I read this book and being as I usually write my reviews shortly after finishing a book, I wanted to skim back over 959 Brenton Street just to refresh my memory. BIG MISTAKE! I didn’t skim it. I reread the whole book. Considering how much I enjoy the author’s writing, I’m not overly surprised that I found myself sucked back into Trent’s story. And while it didn’t help my review schedule at all, I enjoyed myself immensely on the second read.

I’ll be upfront and say that I have very little knowledge of the Mormon church and what I did know about it was not very positive. Because of this, I really didn’t know what to expect as Trent tried to reconcile his sexuality with his religious beliefs because I didn’t know the church’s stance on homosexuality. While the religious aspect plays a large role in the storyline, as it is front and center in Trent’s life, it did not overpower the book in my opinion. I think that was because even though Trent was faced with deciding whether or not he could be Mormon despite being gay, the ultimate focus on the novel was Trent finding out who he was as an individual and what he wanted and didn’t want for his life. And when a frankly frightening policy of overbooking at the college’s dorms leaves him homeless – and this really ticked me off because Trent was a scholarship student whose scholarship covered room and board, so he should have had a guaranteed spot in the dorms – Trent’s scramble to find a place to live lands him in possibly the best place for him to discover himself as a man.

I loved the men of 959 Brenton Street. Going in knowing that Trent would find happiness, at least for a while, with Cory, I wasn’t surprised that I loved Cory’s character. What I was surprised by, was how much I came to love the other residents – Alan, David, and Greg. As the blurb indicates, each man has his own identity that would not be considered normal by much of society and that is precisely why they were so accepting of Trent, which made me love them that much more. I especially enjoyed the relationship that Trent and Alan shared. I was also VERY pleasantly surprised when the domestic discipline (DD) element was introduced. I have enjoyed each of Thurston’s DD novels and its inclusion in 959 Brenton Street merely added to my enjoyment. Obviously my absolute favorite part of the novel was the romance that developed between Cory and Trent because not only were the men perfect for one another, but Thurston took her time in developing the relationship and didn’t rush them into anything (and my thanks to the author for not harping on the age difference). My only disappointment in the book was that I made the mistake of reading the excerpt from book two and now have to wait for its release – boo! Excellent start to a new series.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
